Super Bowl! More Than a Game!

February 1st, 2011

The only television event that can take down American Idol, Super Bowl XLV is set for this Sunday at 6 pm. If the experts are right, it’s going to be a great game. The Predicto community, however, thinks Ben Roethlisberger’s Pittsburgh Steelers are going to find a way to beat Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. They also think President Obama’s going to make the right pick when he meets will Fox News host Bill O’Reilly in a live interview airing before the game.

Whoever wins will certainly be the best team, unlike the sometimes controversial BCS system college football uses. Although Mark Cuban might come to the rescueThe Black Eyed Peas are rescuing the halftime show while Christina Aguilera will sing our national anthem.

A couple notables not involved with Super Bowl XLV—Chad Johnson who later became Chad Ochocinco who is not becoming Chad Johnson once again. He wasn’t involved in much winning or scoring in 2010, but the wide-receiver/reality star did find love. Cowboys QB Tony Romo also found love.

Brett Favre won’t be around either. He’s finally retired. Officially. Until he un-official’s it. But that doesn’t look likely this time. Maybe he’ll return as an analyst?

If you’re not a sports fan, you’ll still want to tune in because Britney Spears is rumored to debut her new music video after the game, right before Glee! With an estimated 100 million watching, it’ll be interesting to discover how many stick around.

But the main reason sports fans and non-fans alike tune is if for the commercials! Remember Betty White last year? It was shocking! Maybe Michael Vick will be this year’s Monday morning conversation piece? Or will we all be talking about Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber’s Best Buy ad?

With so many reasons to watch, Super Bowl XLV might just be the highest rated television event of all-time. We shall see. Get the chips and drinks ready. It’s going to be fun!

State of the 'Skins'

January 26th, 2011

MTV’s new series is impossible to avoid, which is normally a good thing. All press is good press, right? Wrong. So far, it appears the publicity is hurting the show, but just how much? Well, financially the criticism of the racy content has been a tremendous blow to MTV. Taco Bell, General Motors, Subway, H&R Block, Mars Incorporated, Schick and L’Oreal have all pulled their advertisements from airing during the show. Since advertisements are how MTV not only makes money, but also produces shows, this is a terrible sign for the longevity of the series.

The premiere reached 3.3 million viewers, quite impressive but certainly nowhere near Jersey Shore’s 8.45 million. Predicto checked out the 1st episode to see what all the controversy was about:

Skins centers on a womanizing teen named Tony and his group of friends, with the main plot line of getting Stanley to lose his virginity. As Tony says, ‘You got to be laid by 17 or he can’t be my friend.’ Tony’s girlfriend Michelle (who Tony calls ‘Nips’ in honor of her breasts), sets Stanley up with the school druggie, Cadie, who will sleep with anyone as long as they provide drugs. The hour-long show centers around Stanley’s quest to get drugs leading up to a party where Cadie overdoses on pills. The friends rush her to the hospital, but she awakes while they’re pulling into the ER. She’s fine, only in need of a restroom. Tony pulls over on the side of the road so Cadie can relieve herself. Waiting, the friends decide to smoke a joint, but Tony accidentally releases the emergency break while looking for skins (rolling papers). The Escalade they’ve stolen rolls into a lake with them inside. They all swim to the surface, upset they’ve lost the marijuana.

Pretty easy to see why a company might not want to be associated with Skins. The argument is Jersey Shore is just as racy, and while it’s hard to say whether it is or isn’t, the viewers will be the ultimate judge (assuming the show stays on-air.) After the 3.3 rating debut, the second episode of Skins attracted just 1.1 million viewers, a drastic falloff. Right now, a large majority of the Predicto community thinks the series will drop below a million viewers. But user ‘csmk2309′ isn’t convinced: Sexy, drunk teenagers… Aren’t there a million folks who want to see that? With advertisers pulling out and ratings heading south, it’s hard to imagine MTV not canning the series. Sure, the network has a lot of money invested in the project, but there’s much more to be lost in the form of advertising revenue.

If you watch MTV shows online you know they advertise heavily on their website. As of 1/26, you can watch Skins commercial free on MTV.com. Speaking of the website, you must enter your birth date to view the series. If you enter an age younger than 18, a message will appear ‘You’re too young to view this video.’ Funny, the viewer must be 18, yet the characters in Skins are 16 according to Tony’s own admission.

Family Matters

January 24th, 2011

Being a celebrity has its perks—fast cars, famous friends, Hollywood mansions, free get out of jail cards, designer clothes, private jets, award show goodie baskets… you get the idea. But being in the public eye also has its drawbacks. When their personal lives throws them a curveball, nothing is private.

Oprah is about as famous as they get, and any Oprah news is big news. Today’s revelation about her half-sister is certainly surprising to her devoted fans, but O was in control of the story the entire way. The Oprah way of handling the situation (not Jersey Shore’s situation), was to hold a special Oprah Winfrey Show and detail all the events. Her mother, Vernita Lee, kept the pregnancy a secret and gave Patricia up for adoption when Oprah was just nine-years-old. It must be difficult for O to be learning that after all these years she has a sister. As charitable as Oprah is, is a Patricia show next? Predicto thinks so. And is there yet another sister? User ‘rzwh274’ says: I think I’m her half sister too lol.

2010 began on a high note for Sandra Bullock when she won Best Actress at the Academy Awards. After that, it was all downhill. After an ugly divorce (on several levels), Sandra is on her way back to the top. Dispelling her current ‘lovah’ rumors, she’s now working on a new film for the first time in over a year.

Tom Hanks has his own family issues as well, thanks to his son Chester’s rap lyrics. Dealing with more than just references, Brett Favre has got some serious Family Ties he’d rather not deal with as well. Brett, who is officially retired (we think), is still mum on his sister’s arrest to date. Like one Predicto user said, I’m sure he wants no part of his sisters problems- he has his own.

Then there’s the biggest family news for 2011, the Royal Wedding! From the dress to invitees, to dates and performers, Predicto has been actively voting on all things William & Kate leading up to their April wedding. We only wish we could give the Queen’s panties to the person with the most accurate predictions!

Changing of the Guard

January 19th, 2011

For as long as most of us can remember, Regis Philbin was on in the morning, Oprah handled the afternoon and Larry King took primetime. With yesterday’s retirement announcement from Regis, all that is officially changing.

Oprah isn’t really going anywhere—In fact, we’re getting more O with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). But for King and Philbin, it will be just the opposite. It will certainly be odd to surf through the channels and not come across Larry King or Regis Philbin.

The similarities of their lives and careers are quite interesting. Philbin is from New York City, born in 1931. King was born two years later next door in  Brooklyn. Both got their start in the 50’s but didn’t find immediate success. Philbin hosted the Westinghouse Tonight Show from Hollywood but lasted only weeks due to low ratings. King worked as a disc jockey in the morning and gave the sports news in the afternoon… all for $55 a week. His boss told him his birth name, Larry Zeiger, was too ethnic. After seeing a newspaper advertisement for King’s Liquors, Larry decided to go with Larry King.

In 1983, Philbin found success hosting The Morning Show, but he became a star when he was paired with Kathie Lee Gifford in 1988. When Live with Regis and Kathie Lee emerged as a hugh success, Philbin’s workload went full-throttle. Some 23 years later, he owns the Guinness World Record for most hours logged on television with over 17,000 hours in front of the camera.

King moved to CNN in 1985 (after the cable network launched in 1983) and averaged over a million viewers a night through 2010. During his tenure, he interviewed countless politicians, presidents, dignitaries, celebrities, royalty, and more.

But what distinguished King & Philbin was their ability to handle tragedy by providing a sense of comfort for America. From 9/11 when Regis stayed on the air throughout the day, to Larry King covering OJ Simpson’s live high speed chase, Larry & Regis took us through the most notable events of the last 25+ years. Time will be the ultimate judge, but right now it’s hard to imagine Piers Morgan or anyone else handling those events. Larry King and Regis Philbin are Americana. Happy retirement. It’s well deserved.

January: Poor Films, Great TV

January 17th, 2011

January is the month when movie studios unload those films which seemed perfect on paper, but turned out to be disasters on-screen. Seth Rogen as a superhero? Vince Vaughn and Kevin James in a comedy? Both sound like easy winners… They aren’t. The box office numbers show we’re not wasting our time (or money) on The Green Hortnet or The Dilemma, but don’t think America is up to something productive—No, we’re on the couches at home and TV is reaping the benefits, especially the NFL.

According to NFL research, over 100 million people watch at least 6 minutes of NFL football each week. Half of Monday Night Football‘s all-time top ten rated games came from this year. Last Sunday’s New York Jets and New England Patriots match-up brought in 40 million viewers alone. The Jets will most likely top that impressive number this Sunday when they play the Steelers. Regardless of which team ends up in the big game, here’s to hoping Betty White surprises us once again with another Super Bowl ad.

Football isn’t’ the only genre finding success… Whether you like it or not, Jersey Shore is too. With 73% of users correctly predicting it, the show demolished last year’s premiere with almost 8.5 million viewers.

Speaking of getting drunk and making money off it, 15 million tuned into Charlie Sheen’s Two and a Half Men for the 1st time this season. Even though Charlie’s splitting his time with the show and Las Vegas / NYC / benders / drugs / and hookers, he’s still managing to attract a bigger crowd.

One man we really want to see sober is Ted Williams, the once homeless man with the god-like radio voice. Since American Idol heats up this week, why not let Ted come in? Seacrest doesn’t need the work, or money… Give it up Ryan.

Some might argue the Kardashian’s should give it up too, but they’re doing just the opposite, unveiling two new series’. Kourtney & Kim Take New York and Khloe & Lamar (I guess we’ll have to tune in to see what they’re taking– maybe a baby?). Predicto user ‘uyjj7325’ says: I feel that a lot of people are attracted by the notoriety and beauty of this family and enjoy following their journey through the Ups and Downs.

The Kardashian’s are rating gold mines for E!, much like The Real Housewives are for Bravo. It’s never ending drama with never ending cities which make RHO__ so lucrative. Beverly Hills jumped on the scene thanks to the ugly Kelsey & Camille Grammer debacle. Camille now wants out, saying she was portrayed in a bad light. Kim Z on the other hand, wants more!

NeNe Leakes, Kim’s co-star, has already landed another show, Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice. Who knows if Donald is thinking about a new role too… The rest of the Apprentice cast includes: LaToya Jackson, Gary Busey, Star Jones, José Canseco, Lisa Rinna, David Cassidy, Niki Taylor, Richard Hatch, Marlee Matlin, Meat Loaf, Mark McGrath, Hope Dworaczyk, Lil Jon, Dionne Warwick and John Rich.

Piers Morgan takes over for Larry King, some very big (and old) shoes to fill considering King’s steady ratings over the years. It apPiers he knows how to bring in an audience– inviting Oprah vs. Howard Stern to the show for his 1st week. Hopefully O will lend some advice.

And finally, we finish where we began: football. The Super Bowl is set for a record audience, which is good news for Glee. Fresh off its Best TV Comedy win at the Golden Globes, the hit series returns after the biggest TV event of the year.

Baby on Board!

January 11th, 2011

Something must be in the water! The entertainment world is ringing in the New Year with new resolutions and soon, new faces. Over the last few weeks, countless stars have been sharing the good news about their pregnancies, like our favorite foreign spices David and Victoria Beckham. With all the current rumors surrounding his soccer future, it seems the timing is right for a move back across the pond. And speaking of rumors, let’s put an end to the InTouch scandal…Like user ‘rlswr5206’ said: I can’t imagine David Beckham having to pay for sex, ever. I mean, think about how white hot he is. It’s the couple’s fourth white hot pregnancy, but after three boys, will it be their first girl? You guys certainly hope so! Check out the full results on 1/13 at BettyConfidential.com! Does anyone look better pregnant?

Rachel Zoe is certainly close to looking as good as Victoria. Taking the term baby bump to a whole new level, it’s hard to even tell the fashion stylist is 7-months along in this photo. Rachel recently confirmed she’ll be having a boy, which means 65% of you were right! We can see Rachel having a boy, but Mariah Carey? Diva’s need girls, right? The Predicto community thinks otherwise, voting a boy over a girl for Nick Cannon & Mariah.

But Mariah’s not the only diva about to be a mom. Jewel witnessed firsthand how her bull riding champion husband Ty Murray performs.  David Schwimmer and his wife are also soon-to-be parents and according to you, the baby’s going to have a very famous godfather! That’s what Friends are for!

If this next newborn is half as funny as Dad, we can’t wait to meet little Owen Wilson. Although Predicto isn’t one to judge, we are curious to see if he proposes to his girlfriend/baby’s momma Jade Duell. And why not give the youngster a cameo in Zoolander 2 instead of Lady Gaga? Not to be outdone, Owen’s ex Kate Hudson is 14-weeks pregnant with boyfriend & Muse lead singer Matthew Bellamy (not to be confused with Bill Bellamy).

Natalie Portman wasn’t just locking lips with Mila Kunis. After becoming engaged to Benjamin Millepied, a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, the two quickly confirmed a bun in the oven! It’s hard to find someone with a better 2010 than Natalie. She found her one true love and is now ready to be called Mom. Will the normally busy star take time off from her hectic schedule?

Elton John and his partner David Furnish are also proud new parents. They welcomed son Zachary with the help of a surrogate, and we think the Rocket Man is going to sing a song about little Zachary!

In the most unnatural transition of the year, let’s move from Sir Elton John to Octomom. It just wouldn’t be right to do a post about birth without including the lady who’s made a career out of it. Even though she’s not pregnant, surely she won’t mind the extra press.

Along with all the recent baby announcements, there’s plenty of love in the air too. Reese Witherspoon, Lily Allen, Sherri Shepherd and LeAnn Rimes all got engaged. So did Hugh Hefner, but we’re fairly confident there won’t be a baby coming from that relationship… we think… and hope.

Predicto Gets The Golden Globes & Oscars Right

January 10th, 2011

Over the past few years, award shows have been popping up everywhere. But what hasn’t changed is the undeniable fact that the Golden Globes and Oscars reign supreme. The two award shows dish out the most coveted prizes that define A-list careers and make newcomers into stars. It’s Hollywood’s Super Bowl and like all big events, everyone has their own predictions.

Last year, the Predicto community had the Oscars figured out, correctly voting Mo’Nique for Best Supporting Actress, Sandra Bullock for Best Actress and six of the ten best film nominees. So this year, more eyes than ever are keeping tuned into what the Predicto users are saying.

But before the Academy Awards take center stage, the Golden Globes give us a solid indicator on what to expect. You’re telling us that Toy Story 3 is going to continue Pixar’s winning streak, and we have to agree since the film has grossed over a billion dollars worldwide! Speaking of which, when’s Toy Story 4 coming out? Tidbit of information: Pixar hasn’t lost the Golden Globe’s Best Animated Film category since its 2006 inception.

Speaking of Inception,  a tougher call to make, but you’re saying Leonardo DiCaprio’s going to be nominated for Best Actor. Although Inception and Shutter Island were both blockbusters, this year’s class is loaded with stellar performances, like James Franco. His performance in ‘127 Hours’ has already garnered a Golden Globe nomination and he looks like a safe bet for the Oscars.

A long shot for the Oscars has to be Justin Timberlake, even though Predicto thinks he’ll get his first big screen achievement. Justin was good, but his role might have been too small, and after his Social Network co-star Andrew Garfield got the Golden Globe nod for supporting actor, it doesn’t look good for JT.

But like everything else in Justin’s life, it’s pretty darn good. His film The Social Network looks to be a sure thing for an Academy Award nomination. With the Globes’ five finalists released, the Predicto users are saying Inception will win Best Picture. With so many strong films, it’s going to be very interesting to see who pulls in the award.

On the opposite side of the globe, the Razzie Awards, honoring the worst films of the year, will unveil its so-called winners the night before the Oscars. Right now, you think poor Yogi is the worst of 2010. Keep checking Predicto to see if the Razzie’s will be televised live for the first time.

The Golden Globes air live on Sunday, January 16th at 8 pm. The Academy Awards announce their nominees on January 25th with the Oscar ceremony on Sunday, February 27th.

And as always, the action is live 24/7 at Predicto, so visit Predicto.com today to register to play the text message-based game and spread the word. Along with voting, you’ll receive updates when the news breaks. What are you waiting for? Sign up today!

2011: New TV, Oscar Buzz, & Predicto’s 4th Year!

January 4th, 2011

The holiday season has officially wrapped but there’s no reason to be glum. January means new TV and new American Idol (1/19, 8 PM). With a revamped format and the addition of J-Lo and Steven Tyler, Season 10 will certainly be exciting. Meanwhile, former Idol judge Paula Abdul won’t be critiquing vocal ability in 2011. Instead, she’s starring on the new reality competition Live to Dance on CBS. Although Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew was successful for MTV, the Predicto community thinks the Idol premiere will trample Paula’s Live to Dance debut by more than 10 million viewers!

If dancing and singing isn’t for you, maybe you should head back to The Office. Steve Carell and Dunder Mifflin return on January 20th leading up to May’s final episode when Michael departs as Regional Manager. Who will be named the next boss? “Dwight!” says member “serfnjo9215.” Whoever takes over will certainly have their job cut out for them in order to uphold the series’ steady ratings.

Speaking of ratings, Jersey Shore returns for a 3rd season and Predicto users feel the show will have its best season premiere with over 5.25 million viewers! But that doesn’t mean everyone likes the show…  “cdnm2780” comments: “Jersey Shore is trash. All they do is get drunk, fight and hump anything that moves. These are the types of people we want to make famous?”

On a different and certainly more respectable programming note, Oprah has officially launched her OWN network. Now airing in 85 million homes, the Predicto community says OWN will be the highest rated cable channel for its first week.

January doesn’t only mean new TV- it also means Oscar season is heating up! Predicto users are currently giving their thoughts on Hollywood’s biggest night. With 6 films and over $5 billion in ticket sales, Predicto thinks a Harry Potter actor is finally going to be nominated! “With the actors grown now and this being the best film of the whole series you would think it should happen this year!” says member “kzyb8937.”

You guys are also saying Jeff Bridges is going back-to-back with the Best Actor award. With strong performances in 2010 from George Clooney, Sean Penn, Johnny Depp and others, it’s definitely going to be a tough race to call. The only thing certain about the Academy Awards is that nothing is etched in stone until the winners are announced live February 27th.

As Predicto heads into its 4th year, we continue to keep you guessing the outcomes of news, sports and pop culture events. Barbie vs. Bieber and More Holiday Battles

December 20th, 2010

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67Y4QUxoVw8&w=560&h=340]

The Predicto team weathered frigid temperatures to find out what shoppers thought about the sleigh-full of star-crossed rumors running rampant this holiday season. On the heels of last week’s bevy of Hollywood breakups, we got some juicy predictions about which celebrity romances won’t survive the New Year – and which ones will make it all the way to the altar!

Interestingly enough, Taylor Swift was a reply we heard when we asked people to “Speak Now” on both of those questions…as well as one about which music artist will have 2010’s best-selling album!

While Ms. Swift is busy making kissy-face with Gyllenhaal and contemplating her next Grammy, another world-famous, slender blonde is predicted to beat out this year’s most popular new boy toy. Check out Episode 98 of Predicto TV to see why Justin Bieber better watch his back!

And for ScarJo, Ryan, Vanessa, Zac and all those other poor hotties who have suddenly found themselves alone under the mistletoe this season, click here for some helpful hints on how to deal when the holidays leave you heartbroken.

Have a safe and cheer-filled holiday, everyone!
