Will Henry Louis Gates Jr. Get an Apology?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

10-gates-450Henry Louis Gates Jr. is a noted black scholar who teaches at the prestigious Harvard University. His studies and commentary on race are lauded and solicited by many within his field and in the media, but nowadays, he’ll likely be talking about his latest incident.

Last week, Gates returned to his home in Cambridge, Mass., and allegedly had problems opening his front door. His cab driver, who was also black, tried to help him open the door, but a neighbor called the police, claiming there was a robbery taking place.

When the police showed up is where the stories get sketchy. Both the white sergeant, James “Jim” Crowley, and Gates said that Crowley asked for ID, though each differs in the type requested. This misunderstanding led to some shouting and the officer eventually cuffing Gates supposedly yelling, calling him a racist and not calming down.

Gates claims he showed the proper form of ID and asked for the cop’s name and badge number, but Crowley apparently refused. Crowley says that Gates acted belligerently and failed to show proof that he lived at the residence. A big miscommunication that has become so big that even President Obama made reference to it. 79% of the Predicto Mobile community predicts that the officer, who said he wouldn’t apologize for the situation, will indeed apologize by 9/1.

“I strongly believe he should apologize to him. Some of these cops are way out of line these days,” says member “pijk3367.”

“They are getting out of hand. You screwed up, now at least apologize!” says “orcv2469.”

“I don’t think he will get the apology he deserves because it’s all political and a power trip on the race issue,” says “zulp2680.”

Was Erin Andrews Betrayed by a Colleague?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

erin-andrews-interview-20081119030640050-000Imagine pursuing your passion of becoming a sportscaster, getting a prestigious gig with ESPN and traveling to watch some of the biggest sporting events in the country.

Erin Andrews had that dream, but it quickly turned into a nightmare when videos of the commentator — somehow filmed by a peeping Tom at some of her hotel rooms — surfaced last year and went mainstream this week, with stills even being put on the front page of the New York Post.

Andrews is obviously upset, but evidence indicates that the videos may have been created by one of her own colleagues at ESPN, as the tapes depict a naked Andrews at multiple hotels parading around her room getting ready for gigs. Some say that only someone who had the same schedule or knowledge of her itinerary could have accomplished such a feat.

Predicto asked and our members passionately responded: who is the peeping Tom in this case? 50% predict the culprit will be revealed as one her co-workers at ESPN.

“Unfortunately the setup of the cameras has to be someone that is on the inside and knew her routine in order to place the cameras around the room,” says user “uoik7221.”

“No one from ESPN is going to be that stupid. They would just hire someone else to do it,” says “tjbf3664.”

“I think Erin Andrews is beautiful, but it’s wrong for those private moments to be shown without her approval,” says “ogun3911.”

“It really doesn’t matter who it was. Someone’s privacy was invaded and they should go to jail!” says “srae4626.”

Is the Daily News Next on Rupert Murdoch’s Shopping List?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Competition among New York dailies is notoriously fierce, but for all its pluses and minuses, this competition has fortunately led to a plurality of voices. What will happen, then, if two of the biggest names in the New York newspaper industry become one?

Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul behind News Corporation, is reportedly setting his eyes on the New York Daily News, the second-largest daily in the state when it comes to circulation and profitability. The reports came after News Corp. announced its recent acquisitions of the Brooklyn Paper, the TimesLedger and the Courier-Life. The newspaper groups are all based in New York, fueling speculations that the Daily News of real estate tycoon Mort Zuckerman will be next.

Strategic Investing in New York News Industry

“I believe [the acquisition] is something that is being looked at very seriously, although very quietly [inside News Corp.],” says Baldwin, New York media appraiser Kevin Kamen. “Obviously, I can’t say it is definitely happening, but I think it is being considered by Murdoch for sure. Nobody should be surprised, although everyone will be.”

“There is a strategy there,” Kamen adds, referring to the recent acquisitions of three NY-based newspaper groups by Murdoch. “He’s building up the scenery, if you will, the support system.”

If and when the Daily News falls into Murdoch’s hands, News Corp. will have a new addition to its growing list of media assets. This prestigious list currently includes the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones and the Fox group of broadcasting resources, television networks and movie outfits.

It is an astounding collection of media resources and people are worried about the influence Murdoch will have. Predicto Mobile community member “Usercaeh0904” believes that “less people owning media outlets means more of the truth being hidden from the people.”

“Then the papers will not compete, just work together,” says “Userldwb3957.” “He will have cornered the market.” “That would give two papers the same point of view,” says “Usertjry9241.” Other members of the community, on the other hand, think it will be a good business move. Without one of the big names in the competition, influence and profit will go up for the New York Post.

Daily News Acquisition, Total Fiction?

For now at least, the scenario is more of a big “if” than a “when.” Zuckerman, who last year was embroiled in a stiff bidding war with Murdoch when Newsday went for sale, is not obligated or willing to sell his papers. Zuckerman called Kamen’s predictions “total fiction” and added that “The Daily News is not for sale, has never been for sale and will not be for sale.”

However, as more and more papers are shutting down due to the economic slowdown and the emergence of the so-called new media, Zuckerman may reconsider. Back in 2008, Murdoch and Zuckerman were involved in a series of negotiations to merge the operations of their newspapers. The planned merger was reported as a “money-saving collaboration” between the two news outlets and grew out of their failed attempts to acquire Newsday. This at least proves that the possibility of these news tycoons working together does exist. Newsday, incidentally, went to Cablevision for $650 million.

In addition, the Daily News is “sliding into the red.” Despite being No. 2 in circulation, the Daily News is losing its subscribers and profits to online news channels. Zuckerman remains optimistic and believes that the downward trend of the Daily News will be abetted by a new color printing plant.

“I think this is inevitable,” Kamen says. “Murdoch is never going to have an opportunity to buy the Times, but if he can put together a proposal that’s reasonable for the Daily News, I believe Zuckerman will listen.” Will he? And will it be good for the news? Read what the Predicto Mobile community thinks here and join the discussion.

Will Rihanna Forgive Chris Brown?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Rihanna chris brownChris Brown took to YouTube yesterday and made his first public statement regarding “the incident,” also known as when he attacked his ex-girlfriend Rihanna just hours before this year’s Grammy Awards.

In the video, Brown expresses his sadness for what went down, how she should have handled the situation differently and that he’s apologized to RiRi multiple times since then. He also talked of demonstrating more role model-like behavior in the future.

Since “the incident,” Brown has been blacklisted from radio stations, and has had his once-massive career reduced to minor courtside appearances and blog fodder. Now that he’s finally made a statement and apologized, will Rihanna go public with her acceptance of Chris saying he’s sorry? Of the voting members of the Predicto Mobile community, nearly 67% think the so-far-quiet pop princess will publicly forgive Brown by 8/15.

“Yes, she has class!” says member “katg5549.” “She needs to, he’s apologized a lot,” says “rtje7583.”

“Nluvagn,” who voted no, says, “She’ll keep quiet, [like] she’s doing now.” “Rihanna wouldn’t accept an apology from anyone,” says “ezsu0367.”

Predicto TV Goes into Art & Fashion World

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Art-loving celebrities turned out for the 15th anniversary party for Gen Art, a New York organization that supports emerging artists. Predicto TV was on the red carpet to meet actor/director Ralph Macchio, fashion designer Zac Posen, actress Pooja Kumar and Miss USA Kristen Dalton! Gen Art is a leading arts and entertainment organization dedicated to showcasing emerging fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and visual artists. We caught up with Actor-Director Ralph Macchio and asked the “Karate Kid” star if Michelle Obama will appear in an anti-fur ad for PETA: “That’s a real tough call for a First Lady to make a stand in that sort of way. I think you have to go with what your beliefs are… it’s interesting.” [How the Predicto Mobile Community Voted: YES 71% NO 29%]. We met Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton, and asked her if she thinks dethroned Miss California Carrie Prejean will replace Elisabeth Hasselbeck as a host on “The View”: “I’m sure she would be a good addition. She definitely has strong opinions, so she would probably make a good addition to the team.” [How the Predicto Mobile Community Voted: YES 55% NO 45%]. Watch Episode 29 of Predicto TV now!

Has the KFC Code Been Cracked?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

KFCIt ranks among the great mysteries of the Earth, right up there with the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and how the Egyptians built the Sphinx: What are the 11 herbs and spices added to Kentucky Fried Chicken? Having evaded our curious taste buds for decades, one chef thinks he’s finally figured out the fixins.

Ron Douglas of Long Island, New York, runs a Web site dedicated to discovering and replicating the taste at fast-food and sit-down restaurants. The site got so popular that he quit his job on Wall Street to run it full time. Oh yeah, he’s also got a book on the subject, America’s Most Wanted Recipes, in which he serves up what he claims is the magical mix of ingredients that’s been making KFC so delicious.

Since the book is already on shelves (and almost sold out on Amazon.com), we wondered if KFC would confirm or deny if Douglas has the finger-lickin’ flavor right. About 49% of the voting members of the Predicto Mobile community say the fast-food franchise will make a statement confirming or denying his recipe by 11/15, though vocal comments on both sides are being posted right now.

“It would be amazing after all these years for someone to actually figure it out,” says member “qxhl7999.”

“They’ll NEVER confirm if he is right!” says “tjcmomof4,” a statement echoed by “BigA2419,” who says, “Why would they admit to that? Then the rest of the people would know.”

“Scorpiohog” has a different approach: sharing their own recipe. “I, too, know the secret! It’s butter milk, ranch and dill spices. Try it!”

Texting While Driving Banned in More States? OMG

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Texting While DrivingHow many of you out there are guilty of texting while driving? Admittedly, it’s sometimes the easiest way to communicate with friends and family during those bumper-to-bumper commutes.

But drivers beware: combining the two is now illegal in eight states and the District of Columbia, and several others have laws on the books that make it illegal for novice drivers or operators of certain vehicles to text on the road.

Since New York was the latest state to join the list that bans any use of electronic devices while driving, Predicto wondered if more join the bandwagon. And the Predicto Mobile community spoke passionately, with nearly 57% of the voting members predicting that 10 or fewer states would institute bans by the end of the year.

“I think it is a good idea to ban texting while driving in all states. It is a dangerous habit,” says member “pucw8561.”

“I believe they should do it in a lot more states than that, but we’ll be lucky if they do it in six,” says “mrru8049.”

“That’s a very hard law to enforce … a dumb one at that,” says “DisturbedPsycho.”

“They should ban it because your attention is not on the road,” says “dottynell.”

What will be the final tally at the end of year? Visit Predicto.com to find out right when the news breaks. Watch out Brüno: Here come the Funny People

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Brüno is the New No. 1. But Wait Until Funny People is Released.

Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s raunchy new satire, took the weekend box office by surprise with a $30.4 million performance in its weekend debut. The movie is another No. 1 hit for Cohen, who starred in the 2006 bombshell blockbuster Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Despite an explosive debut, the Cohen’s Brüno is already showing signs of slowing down in the race to the $100 million mark among this summer’s blockbusters.

The shock-fest — in which Cohen stars as Brüno, a fictional gay Austrian fashion reporter in a farcical romp through the American heartland — started out strong with $14.4 million in earnings on Friday. However, ticket sales tumbled to $8.8 million on Saturday and to an estimated $7.2 million on Sunday. The movie recorded $30.4 million in total earnings from U.S. ticket sales, eclipsing the $26.5 million opening weekend of Borat, despite the drop off. Still, the poor Saturday performance is a disturbing trend.

Watch Out, Brüno: Funny People is Here

“It is unusual for a film to drop on Saturday,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a box office analyst for Hollywood.com. “Normally, you expect the film at least to be even on Saturday or above compared to Friday, because Saturday is the biggest movie-going day of the weekend. It’s going to be interesting to see how it does over the long run.”

Although revenues continue to plunge, Brüno is on track to turn a profit for Universal, which according to the Associated Press has paid $42.5 million for rights to distribute the movie domestically and in eight other territories.

Adding a side plot to Brüno’s box-office run is its slated face-off with the Adam Sandler starrer Funny People. The movie — featuring Sandler as a self-absorbed but successful comedian who, after being diagnosed with a terminal blood disease, takes a struggling comedian under his wing — is also set to open this summer. With a plethora of Hollywood bigwigs behind the project, Funny People is seen as a potentially bigger blockbuster comedy than Brüno.

Written and directed by Judd Apatow, Funny People features an all-star cast that includes Seth Rogen, Eric Bana and Leslie Mann. It is a much-anticipated film that reunites Apatow and Sandler, two former stand-up comics who used to share an apartment in the early days of their careers. The movie is said to be a thinly veiled life story of Sandler, and we all know what comedic goodness can come from it.

Race to the $100 Million Mark

In a survey conducted by Predicto.Com, 86 percent of the Predicto Mobile community members say that Funny People will breach the $100 million mark ahead of Brüno. It is a considerable margin against Brüno’s 14 percent. And nothing short of a phenomenal marketing push can save the gay Austrian fashionista from taking the backseat to Sandler and company.

Predicto Mobile member dharmabum says that Although the name and photos of Brüno are everywhere on the Web today, Adam Sandler is just way more popular than Cohen to lose the race.” It is a view shared by karmictramp, who says that “Adam Sandler is the better comedian. Sacha Baron Cohen is all shock. The hype will die down soon enough.”

Cohen fans, on the other hand, are quick to defend Brüno. They were quick to point out that the film’s opening weekend has already surpassed the earnings of Borat in its 2006 debut. Brüno’s hilarious. He’s got people buzzing on the Internet about him. He will breach the $100 mil,” user gandermann says. For sure, Brüno has outpaced Borat, but it will be a long way away to the $100 million mark.

Weekend Box Office Results

To reach the top spot, Brüno displaced Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. The sci-fi blockbuster from Paramount held the No. 1 spot for two weekends before Brüno came along. During the movie’s lackluster Saturday showing in the weekend box office,  Gitesh Pandya of RottenTomatoes.com said:

“Audiences probably spread negative word-of-mouth on the film once they had a chance to see it. The controversial comedy will find out in the days ahead how much offensive humor [and male nudity] mainstream American moviegoers are willing to tolerate.”

Rounding up this week’s Top 10 are Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, $28.5 million, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, $24.2 million, Public Enemies, $14.1 million, The Proposal, $10.5 million, The Hangover, $9.9 million, I Love You, Beth Cooper, $5 million, Up, $4.7 million, My Sister’s Keeper, $4.2 million and The Taking of Pelham 123, $1.6 million.
