Will 17-Year-Old Melanie Oudin Face Serena Williams at the U.S. Open?

Melanie OudinRafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Serena Williams are names most tennis fans expect to see in the U.S. Open’s winning brackets, but an unexpected, 17-year-old American contender is joining the fray.

Melanie Oudin of Georgia was ranked No. 70 in the world when the Open began. She’s since beaten powerhouses as Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova to secure a spot in the quarterfinals, a feat not accomplished for someone so young since Serena Williams.

Speaking of Serena, if Williams wins her bracket and if Oudin beats Dutch player Caroline Wozniaki, she’ll face off against the multi-year champion in the women’s finals.
